Where are we?

Nestled next to the Shenandoah National Park, Mt. Vernon Church is a small congregation serving a big God. We believe that God is the Creator of this earth and we are grateful we get to worship in some of His most beautiful creations, the Shenandoah Valley and Grottoes, VA. You can find us at 13188 Port Republic Road, Grottoes VA 24441.

What do we believe?

At Mt. Vernon, we believe that God is our Father and He loves us unconditionally. We believe that He loved us so much that He sent His son, Jesus, to die for us, while we were still sinners. But we also believe Jesus did not stay dead. We believe He rose from the dead and has gone to prepare a place for us with His Father in Heaven. We also believe that God sent the Holy Spirit to guide us and support us here on earth. God, His Son Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are the Trinity - One in Three, Three in One.
We believe the Bible is the true, unchanging, alive Word of God. We believe that God has given us His Word to teach us how He loves us and how we should love others.
We believe this Good News is available to everyone who believes in Christ and makes Him the Lord of their lives.
Our vision is that all will come to hear about Christ and choose to serve Him. All we do at Mt. Vernon Church is with this goal in mind: That Jesus Christ will be honored and magnified so that others can know Him.

What can you expect if you visit?

You can expect to find a very relaxed atmosphere when you visit Mt. Vernon Church. Dress is casual and so are the conversations. You can expect to find young children included in the service. We are welcoming of all ages and we will try our best to make you feel welcomed and comfortable.
You can expect to hear a variety of Worship Music. Depending on who is leading, it might be hymns, it might be upbeat newer contemporary worship songs. What we can guarantee is that worship will be authentic and transparent. The Lord is our focus and we want to praise Him with our words, heart, and mind.
At Mt. Vernon, you can expect that Pastor Greg will be teaching from the Bible. His relatable messages will often have sports stories and connections, but will ALWAYS be based on God’s Word. Pastor Greg is the same person in the pulpit as he is playing with his Golden Retrievers. He is approachable, authentic, and very interested in sharing Jesus with all he meets.
As stated before, you will see young children involved in the service. They take part in Offering Time (you might want to come with some pennies) and then each Sunday you will see them singing up front! We take it seriously that, as a church family, we are to be part of helping our children come to know Jesus better. Children’s Church takes place every Sunday for Elementary Students which is another way we are nurturing our children. We’d love to help nurture your children as well.
Consider visiting and seeing these things! We are more, but importantly, God is more! We’d love for you to come and experience our Lord and Savior with us.

Discover Our Purpose

Meet Our Staff

Our church is built on the values of compassion, community, and service. We believe in creating a space where everyone is welcomed, accepted, and can find support in their spiritual journey.

Greg Stenson, Pastor

Since 2015 we have been pleased to call Greg Stenson our pastor. Greg loves sharing Christ through natural encounters. Greg attended Eastern Mennonite Seminary. While in seminary, he met his wife, Jackie. During his time in seminary he held a position at Mill Creek Church of the Brethren as an Associate Pastor. Greg and Jackie left Virginia and spent 30 years in Springtown, PA. They raised their four children while Greg was the pastor of Springfield Mennonite Church. Aside from sharing Christ with others, Greg loves to spend time with his family and be outdoors. Some of his favorite activities include skiing, mountain biking, fishing, and archery.

LEROY BLOSSER, ELDER

After joining the congregation of Mt Vernon in April 2016, Leroy has become a wonderful figure in our church. Joining our leadership team in April 2019, Leroy strives to have mentoring groups and more activities for young people. He also believes our worship is a huge component of our service. Leroy is happily married to Lois Blosser. When Leroy is not helping the church in various activities, he loves watching football, college basketball, and solving jigsaw puzzles. Leroy loves to fellowship with his church family during church get-togethers and activities.

Shorty Roach, Elder

Starting to attend Mt. Vernon in 1979 Shorty has been a huge addition to our leadership team. Becoming an elder in 1999, Shorty’s favorite church activities include playing games with his church family and enjoying fellowship with each other during our church picnics. Shorty loves to hunt and to fish. He loves God’s creation and enjoys spending time in it. In Shorty’s opinion the absolute best thing about Mt. Vernon is the family feeling you get from everyone in the church. He takes his Pawpaw role seriously and can be found in the Children's Church room sharing Bible Stories with all kids every other Sunday during the worship service.

JACKIE STENSON, WORSHIP LEADER

Jackie came to Mt. Vernon in 2015 when her husband, Greg, was called to be the Pastor. She has over 25 years of music ministry experience and is still learning new songs and styles! Jackie has a passion for discipling young people and young mothers. She has a heart for children and enjoys telling Bible Stories and teaching youngsters songs about Jesus.
